Thoughts from juror Valeria Napoleone

Our judging process is now completed after much debate and hard work from our jurors. We are keeping the final list of 100 painters closely under wraps before our book is ready next year, but all the finalists have now been contacted. We wish them many congratulations, as well as extending our thanks again to all those artists who applied.

One of our jurors, Valeria Napoleone, gives us her insight into the experience of judging the many ...

Gregor Muir / Introduction to 100 Painters

Posted by:

As autumn arrives in London, we’re delighted to announce that Gregor Muir, Director of the Institute of Contemporary Arts, has agreed to write the introduction to the 100 Painters book, while he starts work on his new painting exhibition for the gallery. Talking to him a few days ago, we started to highlight themes and groupings of work that have come out of the competition. There’s a strand of magical realism in some of the artists’ work; a new form ...

Truly international entries

Progress continues

Another day closely poring over entries for 100 Painters of Tomorrow, and some more really wonderful work has been discovered. We’re being as open as we can to different styles and techniques, from abstraction to figurative work, straight oil on canvas to mixed-media, sculptural paintings and even the odd piece of painting-as-performance. Again, we’ve been enormously impressed by the quality of work. Of course there are some duds along the way – psychedelia, eyeballs, women in swimming pools, ...

Preliminary reviews

Posted by:

We have just finished the preliminary review for approximately 25% of submissions, and we are absolutely thrilled at the extremely high quality of work that has been sent in from around the world. We’re already noticing some interesting trends, strange facts, and quirky statistics that are arising at this early stage. So far, the youngest applicant has been 16 years old, and the oldest applicant was born in 1939. We are making note of some of the recurring themes and ...
