Gregor Muir / Introduction to 100 Painters

As autumn arrives in London, we’re delighted to announce that Gregor Muir, Director of the Institute of Contemporary Arts, has agreed to write the introduction to the 100 Painters book, while he starts work on his new painting exhibition for the gallery. Talking to him a few days ago, we started to highlight themes and groupings of work that have come out of the competition. There’s a strand of magical realism in some of the artists’ work; a new form of post-digital minimalism elsewhere; and a notable trend among some painters to blur the boundaries between traditional painting and illustration. Gregor’s also fascinated by those artists of an earlier generation who are continuing to influence emerging painters today – whether Christopher Wool, Philip Guston, Peter Doig or Wilhelm Sasnal. We can’t wait to see how he brings it all together…
